Our top 8 things to do this festive season in the South Hams
Welcome to another Dittisham Hideaway blog, and this month we are sharing with you some of our favourite local festive events and activities that you may want to visit or get involved in during your stay here at Dittisham Hideaway.
South Hams is one of Devon’s most enchanting places at any time of year (in our opinion), but we think that there is something especially magical about this corner of the country when winter arrives. With twinkling lights reflected on estuaries, cosy market towns buzzing with community spirit, and atmospheric winter walks around every bend, the festive season here feels wonderfully nostalgic – the perfect blend of countryside charm, coastal beauty, and Christmas sparkle.
Whether you’re planning a romantic New Year escape, a festive family getaway, or a dog-friendly walking break, here are our top 10 things to do this winter in and around Dartmouth and the South Hams (all within one hour’s drive from us here at Dittisham Hideaway).
Dartmouth packs its December full of festive treats; starting off the festivities is Candlelit Dartmouth which includes a gorgeous lantern parade of homemade lanterns and a visit from the big man himself, plus food and craft stalls and live music and entertainment, all of which are free! Santa Con, a very special Santa pub crawl where fancy dress is compulsory takes place on Saturday 6th with festive fun and a visit to seven of Dartmouth’s fabulous drinking establishments. On the 9th December, the Fat Stock Show is not to be missed if you want to experience the best in local farming (and grab yourself a Turkey for Christmas day). On Christmas Eve, we highly recommend heading down to Bayard’s Cove for atmospheric carols by the water, and on New Year’s Eve the town rounds off the year with fireworks over the River.
Totnes Christmas Market and Lantern Parade
Totnes transforms into a twinkling winter market on selected December evenings (the first three Tuesdays of the month), with artisan stalls, street food, live music and late-night shopping. One of the highlights is the magical lantern parade (scheduled to take place on Tuesday 16 December 2025) winding through town, and Totnes Castle even opens for free as part of its Christmas at the Castle event.
Kingsbridge celebrates Christmas
On Saturday 6 December, Kingsbridge goes full festive for its annual “Kingsbridge Celebrates Christmas” street event. Expect a cheerful light switch-on, stalls, children’s entertainment, music, delicious local food and plenty of Christmas spirit in the town centre.
Exeter Cathedral Christmas Market
Set beneath the stunning cathedral, Exeter’s market feels like a traditional European Christmas scene, with around 100 wooden chalets selling gifts, crafts and festive food – running from 20 Nov – 19 Dec 2025. Pair it with late-night shopping on a Thursday or a magical winter wander around the city’s historic centre for a full Christmas day out.
Dartmouth Steam Railway – Train of Lights
Ride from Paignton to Kingswear in illuminated carriages that light up the countryside along the way. This sparkling journey offers a unique view of Devon’s winter landscapes and is a standout experience for families and romance-seekers alike.
Torre Abbey Christmas Market, Torquay
Torre Abbey hosts an atmospheric winter market in its grounds, complete with artisan stalls, food, music and light displays. As part of the Bay of Lights celebrations, the historic abbey building becomes a canvas for festive projections, making the evening extra magical. The markets take place from 28 November to 21 December.
Scenic Winter Walks
Wrap up warm and enjoy easy coastal and river walks around Dartmouth and Kingswear, peaceful routes around Noss Mayo, or the dramatic scenery near Dartmouth Castle (the riverbank route) – perfect for dogs, kids, or blowing away the winter cobwebs or walking off the over indulgences.
Powderham Castle Christmas Trail
Discover the historic castle dressed for Christmas with illuminated gardens, decorative state rooms and a magical light trail perfect for an evening stroll. A stunning mix of heritage and festive enchantment.
