Where to watch the 2026 Solar Eclipse in South Devon – And why Dittisham Hideaway is the perfect base
Next week’s partial solar eclipse is set to be one of the most memorable celestial events of this generation, and with the South-West of England set to enjoy some of the best views in mainland Britain (up to 95-96% coverage), if you’re thinking about a last-minute escape, how about South Devon, and specifically…luxury glamping at Dittisham Hideaway?
Dittisham Hideaway is nestled in a beautiful, wooded valley, making it a wonderfully peaceful place to unwind. However, because the partial solar eclipse will be taking place later in the day, the surrounding hills may mean the sun disappears from view a little earlier than it will at more open locations.
The good news? Some of South Devon’s most spectacular beaches, coastal viewpoints or national park elevated tors are just a short drive away, giving you the opportunity to enjoy the eclipse before returning to your luxury treehouse or shepherd’s hut for a relaxing evening.
Bigbury-on-Sea
With its wide-open beach and uninterrupted views across the sea, Bigbury-on-Sea is one of the local area’s best places to watch the sky. The expansive western outlook makes it an ideal location for late afternoon and evening sunsets – and should provide excellent views of the eclipse, weather permitting.
Why not arrive early, enjoy a walk along the beach or visit Burgh Island, then settle in to watch nature’s spectacular display.
Bantham Beach
A favourite of ours and with photographers, surfers and walkers alike, Bantham Beach offers sweeping coastal views and plenty of space to find your own front row seat.
Watching the eclipse with the iconic outline of Burgh Island in the background would just be a truly memorable experience (I think that’s where we will be heading!)
South Milton Sands
South Milton Sands is a beautiful spot to experience the eclipse, with it’s sweeping golden beach, clear waters and iconic Thurlestone Rock creating a spectacular coastal backdrop. The wide open expanse of beach provides plenty of space to settle down and enjoy the changing light as the eclipse unfolds. There is a large National Trust car park located behind the beach.
Hope Cove
For a more sheltered and picturesque setting, Hope Cove is another of our favourite locations for watching the eclipse. It’s two sandy beaches sit behind the rugged South Devon coastline, creating a gorgeous natural amphitheatre with far-reaching views out to sea. There is also plenty of coastal path is either direction to find your own perfect viewing spot!
Haytor – Dartmoor National Park
Perched high above the surrounding countryside, with uninterrupted views, Haytor is one of Devons best known viewpoints and a perfect spot to watch this spectacular sky show. We do recommend wrapping up warm, as even in the summer months Dartmoor can feel much cooler than down by the coast.
Then return to relax in luxury
After an evening spent enjoying one of nature’s magical events, return to the peace and tranquillity of your self-catering accommodation at Dittisham Hideaway. Pour yourself a drink, light the fire pit, soak in the hot tub, listen to the owls and the crickets and enjoy the darkening skies as the stars begin to appear.
Even if our valley isn’t the perfect place to catch every moment of the eclipse itself, it’s a wonderful place to reflect on the experience afterwards.

- Check the weather forecast before setting off, as conditions can change quickly.
- Arrive at your chosen viewing location early to find a good spot.
- Remember that you should never look directly at the sun without certified solar viewing glasses or another safe solar viewing method.
- Take a picnic, a blanket and your camera!
